Workplace Safety

     The American Board of Industrial Hygiene defines Industrial Hygiene as the science of protecting and enhancing the health and safety of people at work and in their communities. Health and safety hazards cover a wide range of chemical, physical, biological and ergonomic stressors. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) establishes and enforces workplace safety standards and guidelines within the US Department of Labor.

General Duty Clause: SEC. 5. Duties

(A) Each employer --
     (1) shall furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees;
     (2) shall comply with occupational safety and health standards promulgated under this Act.
(B) Each employee shall comply with occupational safety and health standards and all rules, regulations, and orders issued pursuant to this Act which are applicable to his own actions and conduct.

Respirable Dust

     Total inhalable dust is the fraction of airborne material which enters the nose and mouth during breathing and is therefore liable to deposition anywhere in the respiratory tract. The particle sizes of total inhalable dust are up to 100 microns. Subtypes of atmospheric particles include suspended particulate matter (SPM), thoracic and respirable particles, inhalable coarse particles, which are coarse particles with a diameter between 2.5 and 10 micrometers (μm) (PM10), fine particles with a diameter of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5), ultra fine particles, and soot.
